A good free screen capture utility.
It has more functionality than the Windows print screen option and allows you to save images in formats other than BMP.

Avatar tutorial

Avatars or icons as they are sometimes called are small images commonly used on message boards and blogs. The standard size for an avatar is 100 x 100 pixels. (I have seen some sites that limit them to 80 x 80 or 45 x 45 but that isn't common)
To make an avatar you need an image editing program like Paintshop Pro or the GIMP. (Windows' Paint utility will work but it is very rudimentary)
